Sew a Seam for Charity! The Original Creative Festival is coming to the Sharonville Convention Center (11355 Chester Road in Sharonville, OH) on Thursday, June 25 through Saturday, June 27, 2009. Workshops will begin on Wednesday, June 24. During the Festival, Community Quilt Connection Inc. (CQCI) will be hosting the LoveQuilt™ Connection, a charity event where show attendees sit and sew a seam for charity. CQCI will be using the 6-Hour Quilt by Kaye Wood, famous quilt teacher, author and hostess of TV’s Kaye’s Quilting Friends.
This special charity event was founded by Kaye in 1993. Explaining the LoveQuilt Connection, Kaye said, “If every one of the 22 million quilters made just one donation quilt, 22 million people who need a little extra love, would receive a quilt. That’s the idea behind the LoveQuilt Connection. People are invited to sit and sew some steps on 6-Hour Quilts, which are then donated to local charities, such as Ronald McDonald House, children’s hospitals, Operation Linus, Wounded Warriors, VA Hospitals, fire departments and police departments.” Kaye designed the 6-Hour Quilt for this event because it is easy enough for anyone to make. At the Festival, machines, courtesy of Seams Sew Easy / Baby Lock, will be set up on the show floor. Fabric and batting, donated by Blank Quilting and Mountain Mist, will be pre-cut into strips, and volunteers will be ready to teach the techniques needed to make the 6-Hour Quilt. They will also use products donated by Clover and Schmetz as they create. At the end of the event, a charity which has been chosen in advance will send a representative to receive the quilts. The organization then promises to give these quilts to individuals in need. The LoveQuilt Connection mission is to encourage people to make 6-Hour Quilts and ultimately to have as many people as possible learn the technique so they can “pay it forward” by teaching it to others. Many quilters have introduced the 6-Hour Quilt to their own communities. According to Kaye, more than 5,000 quilts to date have been donated by LoveQuilt Connection events and from the many groups who are carrying on the program in their local area. Mary Kaeser of Cincinnati will be in charge of the LoveQuilt Connection at the Original Creative Festival. Mary helped make the quilts at one event and then took the idea of teaching people to make these quilts to a whole different level when she founded the Community Quilt Connection. The Community Quilt Connection, Inc. has a great store front in the Cincinnati Mills Mall. It is a place where individuals and groups can gather for quilting, with no fees or items for sale. The center offers education, guidance and the use of all the equipment for anyone wanting to make their own quilt. All that is asked in return is a donation of time, talent, or treasure. To date, the center has donated over 300 quilts to organizations such as the Shriners Burn Institute, Alois Alzheimer Center, and Children’s Hospital Transplant Ward. Plan now to join in this wonderful cause June 25-27 and participate in a event that can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Come sew a seam for charity!
