Learn fashion industry sewing techniques and shortcuts that will make your sewing more professional, efficient, enjoyable and satisfying. Connie will demonstrate several sewing techniques and interfacings that are used in the fashion industry today. Topics include efficient cutting techniques, selecting interfacings for fashion sewing that do not need pre-shrinking, pin basting, using a gathering foot, crimping vs. ease stitching, bias treatments, spaghetti variations, placket techniques and zipper techniques and vest linings. This workshop will relieve your fears of the more complicated fashion details.
Kit fee will be paid directly to the instructor.

It's Simple: A Skirt

Dye One On

Hands-on without using sewing machines

Dyeing cloth is an age old passion. Even if you've tried it before or you are just the slightest bit interested in how it's done…you will love this "hands on" excursion into the world of dye. Our project is a silk scarf…beautiful in its own right but we will enhance it with color. We'll be using procion dyes for an amazing vibrancy you just can't get with other types of dye. Cindy will lead you through the processes helping you dye three scarves. Each one will be more beautiful than the last. This is a great way to experience the excitement and fulfillment dyeing fabric brings. Cindy gives you the stepping stones to dyeing your own fabric for garments and quilts. Truly Exciting! Skirt Proportions

Everyone can wear a skirt that is comfortable and flattering: we just have to find the right one for you, and that is what we will accomplish in this class. First is the selection of a pattern that allows you to address your fitting challenges. Then using mock ups, the perfect length and circumference will be determined for each participant. Consider bringing shoes that you would wear with a skirt ---- it will improve your visual. Kit fee will be paid directly to the instructor.

Follow the Line Machine Quilting

Kit includes an 18" hand-painted batik panel of your choice, two strips 7 ½" x 18" and two strips 7 ½" x 32", batting 36" square, hand-dyed backing 36" square and variegated thread. Do you fear making a mistake in machine quilting? Practice your free form machine quilting skills by simply following the lines of a hand-painted batik panel. Learn how to quickly assemble your quilt sandwich with basting spray and begin quilting. Use a hand-dyed fabric for your backing and use variegated thread on top and bottom to create a fantastic reversible project!

Marilyn will show how simple fabric units called "strata" can be cleverly cut apart to create amazingly contemporary quilt images. All images are very powerful geometric patterns, based on traditional blocks - yet strikingly contemporary using her fabric and cutting techniques.

Here's your chance to bring a shirt to class and get it ready for embellishment. You will learn the proper method for finding the center, stabilizing the center front, learn how to add clear elastic to the neckline for strength, cut up the shirt and fit it, stabilize the hemline…anything and everything can be done without a sewing machine…there will be at least one in class for basic basting if needed. The purpose of this class is to give you the courage to do it yourself at home…instead of thinking about it or doing it and not being happy with the results…this will jumpstart your success and you'll be ready to go home and start creating! Join Cindy for this great class! All your stabilizers and your choice of pattern come with the class. Kit fee will be paid directly to the instructor.

Totally Trapezoid

We are going to create a very untraditional, quilted trapezoid purse, with plenty of shape and character to spare. The techniques used in class will cover simple appliqué, simple hand-look quilt stitches, piping in a fun and incredibly decorative way and inserting a purse handle. Kit fee includes all items needed to complete the project. Please bring small (curved if possible) scissors, marking pencils, and clear ruler to class.

No lines to follow, no guesswork for the stitches to use. Learn the tips to stitch like the pros to add panache' to your garments and quilts. Enhance a section, embellish a contour or create an overall design all done with the machine you have. We will discuss fabric, battings, and techniques to use when you make your masterpiece. Surprise yourself as you can learn a new skill.

First, Cynthia will address "cleaning up" the pattern pieces: adjusting and correcting grainlines, mirror images, and seam widths. The technique for straightening the fabric will be shown, and the reason for doing so will be discussed. The importance of circles versus notches will be clarified, and how to make them will be demonstrated. Methods for accurate pinning, cutting, and more will be included.

Fall/Winter 2011-12 promises to be a rather complex season, especially due to the difficult international economic situation and its effects on producers, buyers, and consumers. As people become more responsible with their lifestyles, there is a change in attitude about how they dress. Internationally experienced fashion editors who follow the runway shows in Paris, Milan, London, and New York publish a wide variety of magazines, books and color charts. Using this information, Connie Crawford will present the latest in trends in design, fashion, fabric and colors for the fall/winter 2011-2012 season.

For many, pants fitting is the most challenging of all sewing projects. Learn a method for measuring the body that "makes sense" and addresses fitting issues. Cynthia will demonstrate the measuring process, and the application of the measurements to the pattern. Then you can sew great fitting pants.

Pam will educate on the mistakes made by the do-it-yourself home decorator and teach you shortcuts to make professional looking soft furnishings for your home.

Cindy has developed a different kind of applique embroidery that gives an amazing dimensional quality unlike any you've seen. You will use yarns, wool felts, fiber, roving…all the cool stuff you've bought but haven't gotten around to using. Since developing this technique, she has created new collections of simple and quick designs so you can be Über-creative in just a moment of time. These sew so quick you won't believe it. Add these to your other collections and do embroideries along with the new "Stuffed Embroidery" for unique creations. Join us and see what the "Stuffs" about!

The entire diverse fan images have been quickly and easily made using Marilyn Doheny's creative 9 Degree Circle Wedge Rulers. Simple sewing and almost no seam matching are featured!

What Is a Batik & What Do You Do With It?

A brief history of batik. Step by step samples of how batik fabric paintings are made, from pencil drawing on muslin, through wax and dye techniques, removing wax, to color fast finished fabric. As a Public Show Salesperson you will be responsible for the financial success of our public expo events. You will be responsible for selling the expo by contacting former vendors and cold calling potential new vendors as well as sponsorship and help build attendance. Your responsibility will be to foster and maintain relationships with key industry accounts to increase vendor sales and attendance by communicating the value of the event. Candidate will also assist in expanding to different markets.
