ORIGINAL CREATIVE FESTIVAL CLASSES:
Thursday, 9 am – 12 pm (Noon)
Set In Sleeves
Hands on workshop using sewing machines – Limit 20
Class fee: $40 Kit fee: $15
The key to a smooth sleeve cap is the method used to "work in" the ease. There are few, if any, times in which the fullness should be removed from a sleeve cap because it makes the cap portion of the sleeve smaller and often uncomfortable. The process of creating a smooth cap (free of puckers) involves initial preparation before it is sewn in the armhole. Cynthia will demonstrate the technique and participants will practice the construction with a sample. Using Cynthia's method, you will "set in" the sleeve twice and sew it once.
Kit fee will be paid directly to the instructor.
Thursday, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Enclosed Seam Control
Lecture
Class fee: $10
The basic procedure for constructing any enclosed seam such as collars, cuffs, and facings will be demonstrated. Cynthia will focus on the remaining seam allowances which are the key to controlling the edge once turned: the amount to trim, the order of the grade, and clipping and notching with attention to frequency and amount to remove detailed.
Thursday, 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
Room For The Turn
Lecture
Class fee: $10
Fabric thickness determines the finished interior circumference of a garment. This becomes apparent with thicker fabrics and multiple layers as in waistbands. The ends of cuffs and waistbands are also areas in which room for the turn should be considered to avoid unsightly intersections. Establishing the roll of a collr also consumes fabric. Cynthia will demonstrate the amount to allow in each instance for great results.
Friday, 9 am – 12 pm (Noon)
Skirt Proportions
Lecture
Class fee: $ 40 Kit Fee: $15 (no supplies needed)
Everyone can wear a skirt that is comfortable and flattering: we just have to find the right one for you, and that is what we will accomplish in this class. First is the selection of a pattern that allows you to address your fitting challenges. Then using mock ups, the perfect length and circumference will be determined for each participant. Consider bringing shoes that you would wear with a skirt ---- it will improve your visual. Kit fee will be paid directly to the instructor.
Friday, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Review of Fundamentals
Lecture
Class fee: $10
First, Cynthia will address "cleaning up" the pattern pieces: adjusting and correcting grainlines, mirror images, and seam widths. The technique for straightening the fabric will be shown, and the reason for doing so will be discussed. The importance of circles versus notches will be clarified, and how to make them will be demonstrated. Methods for accurate pinning, cutting, and more will be included.
Friday, 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
Pants Fitting
Lecture
Class fee: $10
For many, pants fitting is the most challenging of all sewing projects. Learn a method for measuring the body that "makes sense" and addresses fitting issues. Cynthia will demonstrate the measuring process, and the application of the measurements to the pattern. Then you can sew great fitting pants.
Saturday, 9 am – 12 pm
Individualized Neutrals
No supplies needed-----Limit 20
Lecture
Class fee: $30
The selection of your most flattering neutrals is based on facial features. Learn why black is most often "not" one of them. Each participant will be analyzed and at least three neutrals selected and samples given. Join Cynthia in this fun class of enlightenment … and leave your "Yes, buts" at home.
Saturday, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Skirt Construction
Instructor: Cynthia Guffey, Cynthia Guffey
Lecture
Class fee: $10
All of the techniques for constructing a woman's tailored shirt will be detailed from the pocket application to the shirttail hem. Many of the methods demonstrated can be applied in other sewing projects. Cynthia's technique for attaching the collar band to the front band eliminates the "jut out" and all of the aggravating (especially when it comes to making the buttonhole on the collar band) bulk.
Saturday, 2:45 pm – 3:45 pm
Tweaking the Armhole
Instructor: Cynthia Guffey, Cynthia Guffey
Lecture
Class fee: $10
Poorly fitting armholes and sleeves create discomfort in the wearing of a garment. They can be too large, too small, too low, too high-----and the list continues. So, let us get the armseye "fixed" and then adjust the sleeves accordingly. Cynthia will show you the "how to".
